The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to restructure its annual central player contract system and is likely to do away with the lowest grade.
The BCCI has three grades in its contract system — A, B and C — and players receive Rs 1 crore, 50 lakhs and 25 lakhs as retainership annually. However, top board officials are looking to trim the number of players getting an annual contract. However, a Grade A player could earn up to Rs 1.5 crore when new contracts are issued after the Annual General Body meeting of the BCCI on September 29.
The idea to do away with Grade 'C' is being proposed to send out a message to the players that a contract has 'to be earned'.
Earlier when BCCI current chief N Srinivasan was secretary it was decided to do away with Grade D which was worth Rs 15 lakh in retainership fee per annum.
"IPL players earn well these days and many of them get more than what the BCCI pays annually. Before IPL, the contract money was considered a reward for a player's efforts. But with the advent of the IPL, the whole scenario has changed," a top BCCI official said.
"The new contracts will be given to only current Indian players and India 'A' players won't find a place in it. There will be only Grade A and B. A decision is likely to be taken at BCCI's Annual General Body meeting. If any player makes an international debut he automatically will make it to the list," said the official.
New contracts are issued after the BCCI president, the chairman of the national selection committee and the BCCI secretary consult each other," the BCCI official added.
