Lt Gen Gurmeet Singh told reporters on Thursday that all three terrorists involved in the twin terror attacks in Jammu region, which killed 12 persons, including four policemen and an army officer, were gunned down.
On Thursday morning, heavily armed militants in combat fatigues stormed a police station, hijacked a truck and drove into an army unit in Jammu and Kashmir.
The militants were still holed up inside an army officers' mess in Sambha district where they reached after attacking Hira Nagar police station in Kathua district of Jammu region with grenades and bust fire at 6.45am.
in New York.
"If the dialogue process gets stalled by this attack, it would be great injustice with those martyred in today's incident," he said.
Lesser known local militant organization, Shohada Brigade, has claimed the responsibility for the twin terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir and said the attack was carried out by its local cadre.
Police sources say that the organisation is a front of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit. The brigade was in news for recently issuing threats to the people not to attend the recently held Zubin Mehta musical concert.
A senior police officer said, "The militants fired indiscriminately after entering the police station, killing four police personnel on the spot and injuring four policemen. The militants also killed a shopkeeper...(and) took away a truck from inside the police station...."
"The militants killed the driver of the truck and forced the helper of the truck to drive it. They travelled around 18 km from Hira Nagar in the stolen truck on the Pathankot-Jammu highway after which they entered the army officers' mess of Samba Brigade," said the official.
The army officer's mess is about 1.5 km ahead of the brigade headquarters in Samba district.
"Once inside the officers' mess, the militants fired indiscriminately, killing four army personnel, including a lieutenant colonel and three other ranks. The militants were engaged in a sustained gunfight by army soldiers inside the mess and intermittent firing exchanges are still going on there," the official said.
Army sources say that they have taken the help of helicopters, which were used to bring army commandos to the shootout site.
The Samba Brigade belongs to the 9 Corps, which is headquartered in Himachal Pradesh. It falls under the army's Western Command.
In 2002, terrorists had attacked Kaluchak army camp in the same area in Samba district and killed 31 people - three army personnel, 18 family members of army men and 10 civilians.
